The New York Mets have announced they have recalled Dominic Smith from Triple-A Syracuse in advance of the series finale against the Miami Marlins. He takes the place of Seth Lugo on the roster due to Lugo being placed on the paternity list.

Smith was initially sent down to the minors on May 31. At that time, Smith was struggling with limited playing time hitting just .186/.287/.256 with four doubles, one triple, no homers, and 14 RBI.

With his -0.1 WAR, 66 wRC+, and options remaining, the Mets opted to send him down when the team was in need of pitching help. At the time, the corresponding move was to recall Adonis Medina.

Since his demotion, Smith has hit well with a 111 wRC+. Notably, Smith is getting recalled at a time when the Mets other DH options are struggling. To wit, Mets designated hitters have combined for an 83 wRC+, third worst in the National League.

Smith’s recall should have no bearing on earlier reports the Mets were contemplating recalling Daniel Palka. Even though Smith was recalled, Palka is still traveling with the team.

Pursuant to MLB rules, teams must be down to 13 pitches at the close of games scheduled for June 20. While the Mets are currently compliant with those rules, they will be forced to make a move once Lugo is activated off the paternity list.

At that time, it is possible Palka could be activated. Of course, Palka could be activated sooner. Palka could swap places with Nick Plummer as a left-handed DH option with Plummer mired in an 0-for-20 slump.

If Palka were to be recalled, the Mets would have to make a mice with the 40 man roster. At the moment, it does not appear there is a 60 IL candidate thereby necessitating a player be designated for assignment.
