The Peoria Javelinas lost their second game in a row in a 12-11 shootout on Saturday evening. Box Score
Four Mets prospects appeared in the starting lineup and all four made substantial contributions to the strong offensive performance:
- Kevin Kendall SS: 1-for-3, R, 3 BB, K, SB
- Stanley Consuegra RF: 1-for-5, R, HR, 3 RBI, K
- Brandon McIlwain CF: 2-for-5, 2 R, 3B, RBI
- Luke Ritter 1B: 2-for-5, RBI, K
The Javelinas immediately fell behind 4-0 in the first inning but would quickly bounce back with six runs in the second inning. McIlwain got the inning started with a leadoff triple and Ritter quickly brought him home with a RBI single four pitches later. After two walks and another single, Consuegra, who was playing in his first AFL game, cleared the bases with a three-run homer to left field.
McIlwain kept the strong offensive performance going with a leadoff home run to center field in the third inning. However, at this point, the Javelinas found themselves down 11-7, a deficit that would prove insurmountable. The Javelinas added two runs in each of the fifth and seventh innings, with limited contributions from the Mets prospects, but could not get the last run that they needed in order to tie up the game.
Kendall, Consuegra, and McIlwain all have an OPS over 1.000 during the first week of the AFL season. Ritter went hitless in his first twelve AFL at bats but ended his drought with two hits on Saturday.
Grant Hartwig was the only Mets pitcher to appear in this game.
- RHP Grant Hartwig: 1.1 IP, H, 2 ER, K, HBP
Hartwig inherited a mess, entering the game with the bases loaded and two outs in the third inning. However, he only added fuel to the fire by hitting the first batter he faced and then giving up a grand slam to the following hitter. He settled in after that and retired the final four batters he faced.
