Keith Law of The Athletic has ranked who he believes are the top 20 prospects in the New York Mets organization. In making these rankings, what really stood out to Law was the tremendous job the front office has done drafting and in international free agency because the Mets farm “has no business still being where it is after so much attrition.”
The attrition comes from a number of trades the Mets have made over the past few seasons. Notably, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Endy Rodriguez were ranked among the top 100 prospects, and they were originally Mets prospects. Still, there is a lot of talent remaining in the Mets organization, and Law ranks them as follows:
- Francisco Álvarez, C
- Brett Baty, 3B
- Kevin Parada, C
- Alex Ramirez, OF
- Ronny Mauricio
- Jett Williams, SS
- Mark Vientos, 3B
- Blade Tidwell, RHP
- Nick Morabito, OF
- Mike Vasil, RHP
- Joel Diaz, RHP
- Dominic Hamel, RHP
- Calvin Ziegler, RHP
- Jesus Baez, SS
- William Lugo, 3B
- Layonel Ovalles, RHP
- Dangelo Sarmiento, SS
- Willy Fanas, OF
- Jose Butto, RHP
- Matt Allan, RHP
We were already aware of what the top five players ranked were be because they were in Law’s top 100 rankings. We have seen Williams on other top 100 rankings, and we may see him on Law’s in the future with Law tabbing him a sleeper saying he “could rocket up industry lists just by proving the hit tool is what we think it is.”
Looking at the rankings, the biggest surprise might’ve been Allan after reports of his needing a second UCL surgery. Law did acknowledge that in his analysis saying, “At this point his future is probably in the bullpen, if he can come back at all.”
Beyond the aforementioned top 20, Law had a group of other prospects of note, which he did not rank. The list of players is as follows:
- Jacob Reimer, 3B
- Christian Scott, RHP
- Bryce Montes de Oca, RHP
- Luis Rodriguez, RHP
- Junior Santos, RHP
Of all of these players, Law anticipates Baty should contribute at the Major League level immediately with Álvarez ready around the middle of the season. He also anticipates we could see Butto and Montes de Oca at some point but not as significant contributors.
Looking back at last year’s rankings, Law noted Carlos Cortes was the biggest drop from last year. In fact, he wasn’t mentioned in the top 20 or was even considered for the rankings because of a mixture of age and his Triple-A struggles.
