The New York Mets have seen a number of bullpen injuries of late. Chief among them was Edwin Díaz’s season ending knee surgery ensuing from Puerto Rico celebrating their advancing in the World Baseball Classic.

There have been other injuries during spring training as well. Bryce Montes de Oca suffered a stress reaction in his elbow leaving him out 3-4 weeks.

Sam Coonrod sustained a lat strain. There is currently no timetable for his return.

Like Díaz, Brooks Raley sustained an injury during the WBC leading him to pull out of the event. He has a strained hamstring, but he believes he will be ready for Opening Day.

With all of the injuries, the Mets made two roster moves to fortify their organizational pitching depth.

After his success for Israel in the WBC, the Mets signed reliever Bubby Rossman. Rossman, 30, made his Major League debut for the Philadelphia Phillies allowing two time over one inning.

Rossman throws in the upper 90s reaching 98 MPH. That’s all that note astounding considering he had been out of baseball for five years.

As reported by Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports in January 2021, the previous WBC bring canceled due to COVID cost him his chance to pitch for Mexico. It also led him to bounce around until he found a job with the Nerds of the City of Champions Cup.

He’s been an analytically driven player. Before signing with the Phillies organization, Rossman has been a note analytically driven player working with Driveline and Tread Athletics.

In addition to signing Rossman, the Mets claimed Dennis Santana off waivers from the Minnesota Twins. Santana, 26, has options remaining on his contract.

As noted by MMN’s Michael Mayer, Santana has an average fastball 96.7 mph last year and had 3.89 xERA in 58 2/3 Major League innings.
