Binghamton Rumble Ponies right-handed pitcher Luis Moreno was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week (June 19-25.) He is the fourth Binghamton player this season to receive Eastern League honors.

It’s a well-deserved recognition for Moreno, who had one of his best starts of the year on June 20th against the Akron RubberDucks. He tossed five no-hit innings permitting only one free pass and racking up nine strikeouts. Moreno backed up that terrific pitching performance with four scoreless frames in relief on June 25th against Akron.

The 24-year-old hurler has been dominant over his last four outings. He’s yielded three runs on 13 hits and six walks while fanning 28 batters across 22 innings. On the season, Moreno holds a 5-2 record with a 4.77 ERA, a 1.47 WHIP, and a 66/31 K/BB rate in 14 appearances (12 starts) for Double-A Binghamton.

The Mets signed Moreno as an International Free Agent out of the Dominican Republic in June 2019. Moreno primarily features a two-pitch mix with a two-seam fastball in the mid-90s and a high-spin curveball averaging 3000 RPM. The 5-foot-8 right-hander has moderate strikeout rates (8.3K/9) and struggled with control (4.9BB/9) over his four minor league seasons. Moreno induces a high amount of ground balls, leading to a 53% rate.
