Mets Claim Right-Handed Pitcher Tyson Miller Off Waivers from the Dodgers

The New York Mets on Friday announced that they have claimed right-handed pitcher Tyson Miller off of waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Miller was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse.

Miller, 28-years old was drafted during the 2016 MLB Draft at the No. 134 overall pick in the fourth round by the Chicago Cubs. He spent five and a half seasons with the Cubs’ organization (minor leagues to major leagues) before being claimed off waivers June of 2021 by the Texas Rangers.

He was with the Rangers from June 2021 through the 2022 season before then heading to Milwaukee after the Brewers had claimed him off of waivers from Texas.

Miller was was traded to the Dodgers in July of this year where he bounced between Oklahoma City and Los Angeles before being designated for assignment on Wednesday.

Miller in 2022 with the Rangers was 1-2 with a 10.97 ERA. He gave up 13 earned runs on 16 hits over the course of 10 2/3 innings pitched with the Rangers. Those 10 2/3 innnigs were over the course of four games played. He struck out eight batters during that season.

So far this season between the Rangers and Brewers, he is 0-0 with a 6.35 ERA. He has given up eight earned runs on 12 hits over the course of 11 1/3 innings pitched. He has pitched in eight games and struck out eight, tying his strikeout count from 2022.

Miller over the course of his career has made just 14 major league appearances.

Miller over the course of his career has made just 14 major league appearances. Over the course of his career between Chicago, Texas, Milwaukee, and Los Angeles (NL), he is 1-2 with an ERA of 8.00 over the course of 27 innings pitched. He has just 16 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.67.

He has spent the majority of his career in the minor leagues. Since 2019 he has predominantly pitched at the Triple-A level, bouncing between Triple-A and being recalled to the majors.

In 2022 with the Rangers’ Triple-A affiliate Round Rock Express, Miller was 4-7 with a 4.52 ERA. He gave up 45 earned runs on 91 hits: 14 of which were home runs over the course of 89 2/3 innings pitched. He had a .259 AVG and a 1.46 WHIP.

In 2023 between the Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee) and Oklahoma City (Los Angeles), he is 1-0 with a 3.45 ERA over the course of 28 2/3 innings pitched. He has given up 11 earned runs on 29 hits, only one of which was a home run. This season at the minor league level he has shown improvement from years past.

Miller is in his final option year, so the Mets are able to bounce him between Triple-A Syracuse and New York throughout the end of the season. He has worked primarily out of the bullpen, but has also pitched as a starter so could be a long-relief pitcher as well.
