Mets Top Prospects: 25-21 Loading up Behind the Dish
20. RHP Nate Dohm
B/T: R/R Age: 222
Ht: 6’4″ Wt: 210 lb
ETA: 2026
Acquired: 2024 3rd Round Selection
Nate Dohm is a high-velocity, solid upside pitcher the Mets took in the third round of the 2024 MLB draft. Dohm utilized a four-pitch mix in college including a four-seam fastball, curveball, slider and a changeup. While the first three pitches are all graded well and could be average to above average pitches, the changeup lags behind. Dohm was able to lean into his fastball and its carry to put collegiate hitters away.
If all pans out for Dohm, he has the upside of a 3/4 type starter and his upside will only be limited by any pre-existing health concerns, having missed time in his sophomore season with a forearm strain. In three college seasons, Dohm only pitched 98 1/3 innings including 29 1/3 in 2024. Dohm did not pitch for any Mets affiliates in 2024 and will probably look to start his 2025 season in the St. Lucie Mets rotation.
19. OF Nick Morabito
B/T: R/R Age: 21
Ht: 5’10″ Wt: 185 lbs
ETA: 2026
Acquired: 2022 2nd Round Selection
2024 Stats: .312/.403/.398
Nick Morabito built on a solid 2023 campaign with an even better 2024 campaign, absolutely destroying Low-A and then spending the majority of his season in High-A with the Brooklyn Cyclones, where he hit a very respectable .294/.373/.3744 as a 21 year old. Morabito has great speed and stole 59 bases across two levels but was also caught 15 times, which still left him with an 80% success rate. Morabito profiles well in the outfield as a good defender, specifically in center field.
Morabito’s power is limited by his slender frame and his line-drive swing without much loft, with only 26 of his 142 hits going for extra bases. However, he shows a solid eye at the plate, which could add to his profile as a potential fourth outfielder with some speed who can play all three positions. Morabito will likely start the year in Double-A with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies and look to build upon his 2024 campaign.
18. 2B/OF A.J. Ewing
B/T: L/R Age: 20
Ht: 5’11″ Wt: 160 lbs
ETA: 2027
Acquired: 2023 4th Round Pick
2024 Stats: .233/.361/.390
A.J Ewing had an interesting 2024 season that saw him exhibit some positive signs of growth, however, he remains a very raw as a player. Ewing played the entire season at 20 years old, starting with the FCL Mets in the Rookie League with a .254/.422/.571 slash line, but upon his promotion to St. Lucie it dropped to .228/.345/.344. In 63 at-bats in the FCL, he hit five home runs. He would hit another five home runs in Low-A – but over 250 at-bats. Low-A pitchers seemed to prey on his aggressiveness or in some cases lack thereof, pushing his strikeout rate north of 28%. However, he showed solid plate discipline for such a young hitter at both levels.
Despite his frame, Ewing posts above-average exit velocities and paired with average speed, making him an interesting prospect. Ewing, who was drafted as a second baseman saw his time split pretty evenly between center field and second base, with a handful of games in left field. While he is still young, he will probably repeat the season in St. Lucie and look to refine his approach.
17. 2B/SS Marco Vargas
B/T: L/R Age: 19
Ht: 5’11” Wt: 170 lbs
ETA: 2027
Acquired: 2023 Trade With The Florida Marlins
2024 Stats: .208/.369/.239
Marco Vargas was the prize in the 2023 trade between the Mets and Marlins that sent David Robertson to Miami and returned Vargas and C/1B Ronald Hernandez. Vargas had shown an extremely advanced eye at the plate prior to the trade in 2023 and continued to show that his knowledge of the strike zone was beyond his years. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned, as Vargas missed the majority of the 2024 season with various stints on the IL with different injuries for Low-A St. Lucie.
Defensively, Vargas played shortstop and second base just about evenly with six games at third base. While Vargas at the moment is an average defender at shortstop, he may profile better at second base as a high-OBP hitter who can steal 20 bases and potentially get to 10-15 homers as he continues to grow into his power and learn which pitches to drive. Right now Vargas is more approach than results.
When all was said and done, Vargas notched four extra base hits and 13 stolen bases with a 34/38 BB/K ratio over 168 plate appearances. While the walks and strikeouts were still great, Vargas was hampered by the injures and could not further develop his power. Vargas will likely begin the 2025 season repeating with St. Lucie in a very promising infield that will probably include the #16 Mets prospect below.
16. SS Trey Snyder
B/T: R/R Age: 19
Ht: 6’1″ Wt: 197 lbs
ETA: 2028
Acquired: 2024 5th Round Pick
2024 Stats: .182/.308/.182
Trey Snyder was the Mets fifth round pick and they went nearly a million dollars over slot to buy him out of his college commitment to the University of Tennessee. The Mets aggressively started him in Low-A St. Lucie, and over 22 at-bats he hit .182/.308/.182 with a 4/6 BB/K.
Snyder currently profiles as a shortstop thanks to his smooth movement, good reactions and strong arm. However, as he continues to grow he may become too big to play the position. Snyder is one of the highest upside players in the Mets system, but is raw as to be expected from a high school draftee. Despite this, the Mets will more than likely start Snyder in St. Lucie yet again and if he continues to struggle at that level, it is possible that they may send him to the FCL Mets to refine his approach and gain confidence.
