Girton Fires Five Perfect Innings

15 up, 15 down. Brendan Girton was a 10th round selection in last year’s draft out of the University of Oklahoma, where he struck out 47 in 35.2 innings, but gave up 29 earned runs for a 7.32 ERA. In a dozen appearances with High-A Brooklyn this season (nine starts) he’s given up two earned runs or fewer 11 times, including Saturday night, when he threw five perfect innings and struck out six in the Cyclones’ 1-0 victory over Asheville. Raimon Gomez finished off the shutout with a strikeout clocked at 103 mph.

Triple-A

Villar, 28, who the Mets signed to a minor-league deal last month after he was released by the Giants, was hitting .176 in June with a .364 OBP entering Saturday. He has more walks (10) than hits (7) this month.

McLean, 23, a third round pick in 2023 out of Oklahoma State, has given up two earned runs or fewer in six of his seven outings since being promoted to Syracuse. He has struck out 35 in 38.2 IP at Triple-A.

Double-A

Binghamton Rumble Ponies (42-19) 8, Richmond Flying Squirrels (18-44) 2

Box Score

Parada has hit seven home runs and five doubles in his last 22 games. Clifford drove in Williams with a double after Williams had an RBI double of his own. The Rumble Ponies had 17 hits.

Suarez has done well in his nine appearances (seven starts) for Binghamton. He also made two starts at Syracuse last month. One was a disaster (eight earned runs in 3 IP) but the other was better (two unearned runs in 5.2 IP).

High-A

Asheville Tourists (27-35) 0, Brooklyn Cyclones (42-20) 1

Benge’s RBI single broke the scoreless tie in the sixth. The teams combined for seven hits and Baez’s double was the only extra-base hit of the game. Ewing’s 30 steals are second in the South Atlantic League.

Girton, 23, threw 44 of 63 pitches for strikes. He has 55 strikeouts in 46.1 IP. Díaz, 21, of the Dominican Republic, has struck out 52 in 47.2 IP.

Box Score

Houck, 20, is 12-for-39 (.308) this month with four extra-base hits. The 2023 first round pick’s OPS is up dramatically from last year (.610 in 471 plate appearances).

Elian Peña singled up the middle for this first hit with the Mets organization, breaking an 0-for-26 start. He went 1-for-3. Second baseman Diover De Aza (2-for-2, stolen base) and left fielder Adolfo Miranda (1-for-3, two runs, stolen base) each hit solo homers. RHP Julio Gonzalez, an 18-year-old from Mexico, pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of one-hit ball with two strikeouts. Lefty Jamdrick Cornelia struck out four in 1.1 scoreless IP to earn the win.

 DSL Mets Blue (2-8) 5, DSL Marlins (5-5) 10

Box Score

Marcos Terrero, a 19-year-old who posted a .777 OPS in 30 DSL games last year, went 3-for-4 with a triple. Shortstop Yorber Semprun was 2-for-2 with a double, two runs scored, a walk and two stolen bases. The 17-year-old from Venezuela is off to a 6-for-13 start. Yovanny Rodriguez, an 18-year-old catcher, hit a solo homer. RHP Jean Brito, 19, hurled 2.2 scoreless innings to drop his ERA to 4.32 over 8.1 IP. He gave up two hits, walked two and struck out two.
