The Mets and veteran reliever Carl Edwards Jr. agreed to a minor-league deal that includes an invite to major league spring training, sources told Will Sammon of The Athletic on Monday.

Edwards, 34, threw three innings apiece for the Angels and Rangers last season and made one appearance without recording an out for the Padres in 2024. His last significant MLB playing time was in 2023 when he pitched to a 3.69 ERA and and 1.52 WHIP over 31 2/3 innings for the Nationals.

He went 5-2 with a 3.38 ERA in 14 starts for Quintana Roo in the independent Mexican League last season, striking out 60 in 74 2/3 innings. He also threw 50 2/3 innings combined at Triple-A for the Rangers and Angels affiliates, posting a 4.44 ERA and fanning 57.

Edwards debuted with the Cubs in 2015 and in 11 seasons pitching in relief has gone 16-14 with a 3.56 ERA and 1.21 WHIP. The right-hander has struck out 334 in 286 career innings. He had three solid seasons with the Cubs from 2016 to 2018, where his strikeouts per nine innings were 13, 12.8 and 11.6. He punched out a career-high 94 in 66 1/3 innings in 2017.

After seeing little MLB work from 2019 to 2021 due to injuries and inconsistency (he threw 27 1/3 innings combined for five teams in those years), he was signed to a minor-league deal with the Nationals before the 2022 season.

He made the most of his opportunity in Washington, posting a 2.76 ERA over 62 innings and striking out 56 that year. A right shoulder injury sidelined Edwards in June 2023 and he suffered a stress fracture in his right scapula before he could return to the majors.
