The Mets’ bid to sweep the Washington Nationals in DC fell short last night in a 6-5 loss. However, New York rookie Matt den Dekker made his presence felt on national television. The Mets and Nats were the ESPN game of the week on Sunday Night Baseball, and den Dekker clubbed his first career home run in the big leagues in the top of the second inning, giving New York a 3-0 lead at the time. Here’s a look at the blast:

That ball was crushed. Sportscenter also recognized that shot on Twitter moments after it happened:

Little did they know, Matt already calls himself that.

After a slow start in his MLB debut (0-for-5 with a K), den Dekker has started to heat up over his last couple of games. He earned his first multi-hit game last night in Washington, and is now 3-for-7 in his last two games, including that home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Through his first 12 at-bats in the big leagues, the outfielder is hitting .250/.308/.500.

Congratulations to Matt on his first career home run! Hopefully it will be the first of many for him. You can congratulate him yourself on Twitter, and make sure you follow him: @UpperDekker.
