Brooklyn Cyclones manager Ed Blankmeyer was left the New York Mets organization, and he has accepted a role as the Chicago Cubs minor league coordinator. Blankmeyer, 67, was hired to replace Edgardo Alfonzo after the Mets legend led the Cyclones to what proved to be the final New York-Penn League championship.

Blankmeyer was originally hired in 2020 after 25 years managing St. John’s University. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Blankmeyer would only manage for the Cyclones in 2021. Under his stewardship, the Cyclones finished 48-70 in the High-A East.

In his one year, Blankmeyer had the opportunity to manage some of the Mets very best prospects including Francisco Alvarez, Brett Baty, and Ronny Mauricio. As Blankmeyer told Andrew Battifarano of the New York Post, “All three have different personalities, but they’re good teammates and good men. And, more importantly to me, they have the passion to succeed.”

This offseason, the Mets have overtaken measures to improve their player development. Those efforts will now entail finding a replacement for Blankmeyer.
