The New York Mets have been dealing with some pitching injuries early in the season necessitating starters and relievers being rotated between Queens and Syracuse. As a result, we have seen the Major League rotation be comprised of four would be Syracuse starters.

This week, Max Scherzer is set to return from his suspension, and Justin Verlander appears poised to be activated from the disabled list. As a result, the Mets have sent David Peterson and José Butto down to Triple-A Syracuse.

Peterson had won a job in the Opening Day rotation after José Quintana‘s bone graft surgery. In his six starts this season, Peterson is 1-4 with a 7.34 ERA, 1.565 WHIP, 2.9 BB/9, and a 10.6 K/9. He has allowed the most earned runs in the National League so far this year.

Butto was a stop-gap measure. He pitched admirably in his two starts allowing three earned over 9 2/3 innings. The walks were an issue for him with his issuing 10 free passes.

Sending Peterson and Butto down to Triple-A means Tylor Megill will stay in the Mets rotation for the time being. He has a 106 ERA+ to start the year, but with the walks, he has a worrisome 6.03 FIP. Over his five starts, he is 3-1 with a 3.96 ERA, 1.480 WHIP, 4.3 BB?9, and a 6.8 K/9.

Peterson and Butto being sent down is part of a flurry of recent roster moves for the Mets organization. From the Major League side, Adam Ottavino was activated off of the paternity list, and Brooks Raley was put on the IL with elbow inflammation. Raley is joined on the IL by Edwin Uceta, who sustained a left ankle sprain.

Right-handed reliever John Curtiss has been recalled. Curtiss has made nine relief appearances for the Mets this season pitching 10 1/3 innings. He has not recorded a decision while posting a 4.35 ERA, 1.258 WHIP, 4.4 BB/9, and a 6.1 K/9.

In other news, Tim Locastro and Stephen Nogosek have been sent on rehabilitation assignments. Locastro is reporting to Low-A St. Lucie, and Nogosek is reporting to Triple-A Syracuse.
