When MLB Pipeline released their Top 100 prospect rankings, the Mets had four prospects ranked. Those four prospects were Ronny Mauricio (#62), Francisco Alvarez (#63), Andres Gimenez (#84), and Brett Baty (#93).

As the 2020 season progresses, we may see other Mets prospects join those four prospects on these rankings. In fact, in a recent mailbag, Jim Callis ranked Matthew Allan as the 109th best prospect in baseball.

Allan, 18, was the Mets third round pick in the 2019 draft. While he was the team’s third round pick most had a first round grade on Allan, and the Mets were able to obtain him in the third round on a daring and successful gambit. In drafting and signing him, MLB Pipeline believes the Mets obtained a high end prospect:

While some scouts don’t love Allan’s arm action in the back, it doesn’t affect him out front and he’s able to command all three of his pitches extremely well, repeating his delivery consistently. With his combination size, stuff and feel, Allan has all the ingredients teams look for in a potential frontline starter.

What is interesting is while Allan is ranked lower than Alvarez on the top 100 rankings, he’s currently ahead of Alvarez on MLB Pipeline‘s rankings of the top 30 Mets prospects. The caveat there is those rankings will be updated in February.
