Another game in the Dominican Winter League, another multi-hit day for Mets prospect Ronny Mauricio. The switch-hitter has been one of the best hitters in the league from Day 1 this year including his fourth home run on Tuesday night. He had two more hits on Thursday night in the Tigres del Licey 1-0 win over the Toros del Este.

Mauricio hit his league-leading 13th double in the game and also chipped in a single. The league RBI leader is second with his .857 OPS behind veteran Henry Urrutia. There’s already lots of talk in the Dominican that Mauricio could end up being voted as the league MVP as the regular season is coming close to the end.

Mauricio, a long-time shortstop, has played third base in four of the last five games at the request of the Tigres del Licey to make room for Oneil Cruz. The Mets, who played Mauricio at shortstop exclusively during the regular season, gave the Dominican team the okay to play the 21-year-old at third base. With Mauricio likely to start the 2022 season in Triple-A Syracuse the big question will be at what position do the Mets play him? Do they play him at multiple spots including reps in the outfield?

Mauricio has been one of the lone Mets’ prospects playing in winter ball for much of the season, but pitching prospect Joshua Cornielly was recently activated by the Leones del Caracas of the Venezuelan League. The 21-year-old pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning with one strikeout on Wednesday night. Cornielly had a 5.21 ERA for Low-A St. Lucie this season, though he did register 53 strikeouts in 43 2/3 innings.

In other Mets prospect action, catcher Matt O’Neill is playing for the Melbourne Aces in the Australian League. The 25-year-old has a .846 OPS through 12 games in Australia.
