Martires Arias became a minor league free agent last month because his contract ran out after playing seven seasons in the Mets farm system. He is part of a very large group of minor leaguers (23) that elected free agency this offseason including Vic Black and Dillon Gee. The Mets also released 14 minor league players earlier this offseason. Here is an article with the Mets offseason movement.
Arias (25) has signed a minor league deal with the San Diego Padres after a strong 2015 season in the low minors for the Mets. He went 8-5 with a 2.29 ERA and 1.093 WHIP in 21 starts with 20 of them being with the Savannah Sand Gnats and the other with the St. Lucie Mets.
He set career highs with 118 innings pitched, 115 strikeouts, and three complete games while allowing just one homerun. Overall in his career he has gone 23-20 with a 3.16 ERA and 1.255 WHIP without reaching AA. The 6’7 right-hander did hit 15 batters and produced 11 wild pitches in 2015.
There is going to be a lot of action from the Mets this offseason when it comes to minor league deals as they look to fill up some of the upper level depth. They have signed two so far, super utility guy Ty Kelly which I covered here and right-handed pitcher Stolmy Pimentel who I talked about here.
Going to see a lot of AAAA players in Vegas this season…
TONS, hopefully with all those low risk signees the Mets can strike gold or silver again like with Dickey, Valentin, Torres, etc.
Do you think Carillo moves up? Plaia looks ready to move forward, Nito as well. Curious as to how they fill out the A ball full season as Mazieka and Sanchez both seem to be poised to pass Brosher. Though I can see Sanchez reporting to Brooklyn.
This is what I think happens: Carrillo 51’s, Plaia B’Mets, Nido PSL, Mazeika Fireflies, Sanchez in Brooklyn. With Brosher being backup in Savannah and Mazeika playing some 1B.
I can see that, there is talent at the position, though Sanchez appears to be the only projected regular at this point. I like what I have seen of Nido, though in a gamer, backup sense
Ya I think Sanchez defense is strong enough to carry him until the bat catches up. Nido did a get job throwing out runners last year (39%) after struggling with that to start his career.
Wow. Just looked at all of your postings on Mets Minors FAs.
This is a true bloodletting… w/o much press at all.
This stands quietly as a major housecleaning by Sandy of what was left of all of Omar’s leftovers & a few of Sandy’s draft, FA & trade misses.
I’d not realized how many of the org. guys in the system were Omar guys, still trying to make it. Sandy’s coming in created a whole now developmental approach & a 2nd chance to scores of guys who were left to sink or swim in Omar’s hands-off system. The cream of what remained learned anew & rose to be a part of the Pennant-winning team in Queens. A great number were let go fairly soon after Sandy’s arrival. And a great many have now had five full years to progress under the new regime, but have failed to push their way much past where Sandy found them. So, this winter, Out We Go!
I expect a lot of MiL FAs to be signed for the upper levels; most of Sandy’s draft picks to go flying up the system, even if merely to fill roster slots; and close to the entire 2016 draft to be signed to fill GCL & Appy League holes. A lot of the Intl. signings should advance as well.
Man, I’m not sure how something so dramatic could have stayed so quiet.
