Two weeks into the minor league season and the Mets system has seen a mixed bag of results from their affiliates pitching staffs including the Las Vegas 51s having the second worst WHIP (1.561) in the Pacific Coast League while the St. Lucie Mets have the second best SO/W (3.76) in the Florida State League. The Columbia Fireflies have allowed the most homers (14) in the South Atlantic League and the Binghamton Mets have the fewest strikeouts (82) in the Eastern League.

Who’s Hot

P.J. Conlon – Columbia Fireflies

He started his career with 17.2 spectacular relief innings for Brooklyn in 2015 and is now relishing his role as a starter for the Fireflies. He has made three starts, going 2-0 with a 1.08 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and has walked only one batter compared to 11 strikeouts. Even more impressive is that he is holding right-handed hitters to a .209 average thanks in part to an improved changeup.

Joe Shaw – Columbia Fireflies

Another pitcher from the Mets 2015 draft that pitched exclusively out of the bullpen in their first season and is now succeeding in the Columbia rotation. In two starts, he has gone 12 innings allowing two runs (1.50 ERA) and has yet to issue a walk. The right-hander has struck out eight batters in each of his two starts and has given up only nine hits.

Tim Peterson – St. Lucie Mets

The right-hander has allowed two baserunners (H, BB) in 6.2 innings that spans four games. He has struck out 11 batters including nine of the 15 right-handed hitters he as faced.

Sean Gilmartin – Las Vegas 51s

Gilmartin is back to the familiar role of starting games and has only one run in his first 10.2 innings for Vegas. He has allowed eight hits and two walks with 12 strikeouts. His last time out he threw seven scoreless innings and gave up only three hits with eight strikeouts. Righty hitters have gone a measly 3 for 20 against him this year.

Robert Gsellman – Binghamton Mets

Through three starts the right-hander has a 7.7 K/9 in 18.2 innings after striking out only 4.8 K/9 for the B-Mets in 2015. He has a 1.45 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and is holding opponents to a .186 average. The most important developments for him come outside the box score however, he has reportedly hit 98 MPH with his fastball and has added a slider to his arsenal.

Who’s Not

Akeel Morris – Binghamton Mets

The B-Mets closer has struggled with his command to start the season with four walks issued in his first 4.2 innings this year. He has allowed four runs on five hits including a homerun, which he gave up only two of the entire 2015 season in the minors. He is 1 for 2 in saves chances but does have six strikeouts.

Seth Lugo – Las Vegas 51s

One good start and two horrendous ones have his early season ERA sitting at 10.66 and his WHIP at 2.35. He has given up a whopping 26 hits in 12.2 innings and has issued five walks. The right-hander lasted only 2.2 innings in his last start giving up a career high 10 hits and nine earned runs. Left-handed hitters are an unreal 14 for 33 against him to start the season.

Tyler Pill – Binghamton Mets

I said it before the season began and nothing against Pill but I am shocked the Mets have not tried him as a position player yet given his .422/.426/.578 slash line in 45 at bats. On the mound, he has struggled going 9.2 innings and giving up nine runs on ten hits and five walks.

Christian Montgomery – Columbia Fireflies

In four relief innings the right-hander has walked five, hit one batter and uncorked four wild pitches. He has a 11.25 ERA, 2.50 WHIP and the league is hitting .333 against him.

Scarlyn Reyes – St. Lucie Mets

Two starts and two losses for the 26-year old who has given up 14 runs (nine earned) in 7.2 innings. He has allowed ten hits, walked five batters and thrown four wild pitches already.
