After suffering through several injury plagued seasons, Steven Matz was finally healthy in 2013. In 21 starts last season, Matz posted an excellent 2.62 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP with 121 strikeouts in 106 innings. Matz followed up his brilliant regular season with an even better postseason. In two series clinching victories, Matz tossed 12 scoreless innings and struck out 17.
Matz, who was drafted by the Mets in the 2nd round of 2009, has one of the most electric arms in the system. The 22 year old lefty features a blazing fastball with good movement that can reach the mid 90’s. A left hander that can throw as hard as Matz is rare, and his fastball has the potential to dominate major league batters. Matz’s also throws a curveball and a changeup, which can both be above average major league pitches.
Control is one of Matz’s biggest concerns. He cut his walks down from his short stint with Kingsport in 2012, but he still struggled with his command at times last year. In total, He walked 38 in 106 innings for Savannah. However, I believe his control will continue to improve as he gets more experience on the mound.
Outlook: Matz has always had tremendous ability, so it was great to see him have an injury free season in 2013. Since he has been with the organization for so long, it’s easy to forget that he’s still only 22 years old and is very inexperienced. If he can remain healthy, Matz has a very bright future. He could force his way towards the top of Mets prospects lists by the end of year, and he has the potential to become a solid starter for us in the future.
