Listen, when you put up absolute video game numbers in Division 1 baseball, there will be MLB clubs that are interested in your services. That’s what Jack-Thomas Wold did in his senior year at UNLV, slashing a hilarious .429/.491/.793.

With a current stature that resembles Kyle Schwarber from his earlier days, Wold has a long history of hitting and hitting for power from the left side of the plate. Encouragingly, he came straight to full-season ball after signing, and put up a solid slash line.

Wold uses a loopy swing with plenty of loft (seen below), and he has shown both good ability to limit swing and miss while catching plenty of barrels during his amateur career. His small sample at St. Lucie late in the summer did come with a meager walk rate (only five walks in 86 at-bats), but he held his own, striking out only 17 times.

Wold could stand to get shorter to the ball by getting his hands into a better hitting position sooner. But that’s a pretty common adjustment, and Wold shows ability to impact the baseball with a minimal stride. As he faces top velocity and the best breaking balls of the higher levels, showing he can maintain his offensive profile will be a must.

Wold doesn’t run especially well, and he does profile best at first-base. The Mets did run him out in RF in his pro debut, and he made 30 out of 31 put outs. Perhaps Wold can show passable utility in an outfield corner, possibly with some reverse projection on his frame much like how Schwarber made himself into a sufficient outfielder. Then, he would need to hit his way up the ladder and you could be looking at a big-league bench bat.

With numbers like he put up in college, why be in a rush to bet against that?
