MMN Recap 06/07: Delgado Gets Third Straight Win, Nimmo Homers

Las Vegas 51s (31-27) 13 vs. Tacoma Rainiers 2

BOX SCORE

The 51s beat the Seattle Mariners Triple-A Affiliate in the final game of the series 13-2 to win the series against the PCL Northern leader 3-1.

Every hitter in the lineup got at least a hit. Nimmo hit his third home run of the season and is batting .387 in his last ten games. Monell hit his fourth home run in his last ten games, batting .366 in that span. Cecchini had his fifth multi-hit game in his last ten and his third three-hit game over that span. He is hitting .390 in his last ten. Marc Krauss added to his team leading home run total, he now has eleven on the year which is seventh in the PCL.

Ynoa has pitched through six innings in eleven of his twelve  starts this season. Ynoa leads the PCL in wins and is third in the league in ERA. Goeddel has not allowed a run in his last five outings and in his last ten he had eight scoreless outings. His ERA in his last five dropped from 6.05 to 4.94.

Tuesday was announced that T.J. Rivera was named player of the month in the PCL. Congrats to T.J. Rivera, who was also named Mets Minors offensive player of the Month by us at MMN.

Binghamton Mets (24-32) 6 vs. Trenton Thunder 4

The Binghamton Mets won their third in a row beating the Double-A Affiliate from the New York Yankees in the series opener 6-4.

Gibson and Cruzado both have at least a hit in nine of their last ten games. Gibson is batting .409 and Cruzado is batting .395 in those last ten. Evans is working on a seven game hitting streak, after his third straight 1 for 4 day but still has not walked in Double-A this season.

  • Casey Delgado RHP: 5 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, W (4-2 4.28 ERA)
  • Alberto Baldonado LHP: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, BB, 3 K, first hold (4.76 ERA)
  • Luis Mateo RHP: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, BB, 2 K, second hold (2.42 ERA)
  • Akeel Morris RHP: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, K, sixth save (4.62 ERA)

Delgado got his third straight victory as the bullpen could hold the two-run lead with four scoreless innings. Delgado is now 8-2 in ten starts between the St. Lucie Mets and the Binghamton Mets. In 60.2 innings he’s pitched to a 3.56 ERA.

Colombia Fireflies (29-28) 4 vs. Augusta Greenjackets 3 F/10

Scheduled as a seven inning doubleheader didn’t go how they planned it in the first game as the Fireflies beat the Class-A Affiliate from the San Francisco Giants after ten innings.

  • J.C. Rodriguez 3B: 2 for 5, 2B, run scored .257/.319/.374
  • David Thompson DH: 2 for 5, 2 K, 2 runs scored .287/.349/.480

  • Milton Ramos SS: 1 for 5, RBI, 2 K, SB .239/.317/.301

In the top of the tenth, Thompson singled and later scored the go ahead run on a wild pitch. Since coming back from the DL, Thompson is 7 for 28.

It was Canelon his fifth straight quality start as he lowered his ERA to 2.83 which is 14th in the South Atlantic league. Canelon has not allowed more than two walks in a start. Tyler Bashlor allowed more than one run per outing for the first time this season. His ERA went up from 1.09 to 2.03

Augusta Greenjackets 6 vs. Colombia Fireflies (29-29) 5 F/7

The Fireflies could not sweep the doubleheader as they lost the second game by a 6-5 final score.

The Fireflies scored four runs in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.

Badamo had not allowed four or more runs since his second start of the season. After a no decision, Badamo has not lost a game in his last four starts. Missigman pitched a scoreless sixth but, could not finish it in the seventh. He allowed a run to tie the game and left with runners on first and second with two outs. Davis came in to try to get the game to extra innings again. Davis allowed a walk to load the bases and that was followed by a walk-off hit by catcher Matt Winn. Missigman had allowed just one run in his last 17.2 innings before allowing two in this game.

Tuesday afternoon it was announced that David Thompson, PJ Conlon and Vinny Siena were selected to represent the Fireflies in the South Atlantic League All-Star game.

St. Lucie had an off day. They will start a four game series against Dunedin on Wednesday. 

DSL Mets1 and DSL Mets2 were postponed due to rain. They are both scheduled to play a doubleheader on Wednesday.

    What to do with Gavin Cecchini?
    Since i became a hardcore minor league player follower in like 2013 I’ve noticed thisyear being the one where Gavin had gotten the least attention.
    Cabby has cooled off (like everyone else) but overall hes still solid into next year.
    Regardless of power potential can Gavin be a 3B at least in short term?

    I don’t mean this to come across as picking nits with Corne’s writeup, but stating that “Nimmo hit his third home run of the season and is batting .387 in his last ten games” sort of misses the point. He has been very productive over the past 32 games (after a slow 16), hitting .373 over that time if Corne wanted to limit it to just average. But even more impressive is his entire line over those 32 games, covering 146 PA – .373/.452/.603/1.055 with 12 2Bs, 4 3Bs, 3 HRs, 24 RBI, 23 R, 19 BB and 21 SO. Just not sure why he limited it to the last 10 games, but this is exactly the type of sustained success we’ve all been hoping to see. With little of it seeming to be Vegas/PCL inflated, but rather driving the balls into the gaps.

    He may lack the arm strength to play 3B. His arm plays at SS, but is not considered strong. Not sure his arm plays at 3B.

    Yes it appears he his hitting the balls in the gaps. He’s hitting for a lot of triples and doubles which is good to see. I still think he can be a nice MLB player. He’s even hitting lefties well!

    I think he can definitely play 3B in the short-term but still see him at SS long-term.

    I would think that is only true at times. Sometimes they play on the grass and it might be a shorter throw. Other times they play back or field the fall falling into foul territory and it is considerably longer. Seems that it depends where they field the ball.

    Also, the throw from 3B is generally on the same or near similar line/angle. The throw from SS can vary considerably depending on where the ball is fielded (anywhere from behind 2B to near the 3B, or basically anywhere on the left side of the diamond).

    Fair enough. I have only seen video of Cecchini’s defense and am far from an expert, which is why I remarked that he “may” lack the arm strength, etc. Did not mean to give the impression that I knew anything definitively and appreciate your perspective on things Michael.

    I’m far from an expert as well. Just my perceptions of watching and playing the game. I think we can all agree SS is a more difficult position, so if a player can naturally play SS, they could likely play most IF positions adequately (except possibly 1B).. Enjoy the conversation when I should be working haha
