The New York Mets struck a deal with the Cincinnati Reds to acquire outfielder Tyler Naquin and left-handed reliever Phillip Diehl in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Jose Acuña and center field prospect Hector Rodríguez. As the Mets needed room on their 40 man roster, R.J. Alvarez was designated for assignment.
As noted by MMN‘s Michael Mayer both Acuña and Rodríguez are already considered top 30 prospects in the Mets organization. Much of that has to do with how well each have performed this season.
Acuña, 19, has made eight appearances this season between the Florida Complex League and with the St. Lucie Mets. He is 3-0 with a 3.16 ERA, 0.974 WHIP, 2.5 BB/9, and a 12.5 K/9. Acuña has a fastball which reaches the mid-90s with a high spin rate while working on promising secondary offerings.
Rodríguez, 18, has played 28 games between the Florida Complex League and with the St. Lucie Mets. He’s hitting .342/.378/.532 with four doubles, four triples, three homers, and 16 RBI. He is considered a plus runner who has played center predominantly and some second base. He has been successful in 12/15 stolen base attempts.
Alvarez, 31, was signed as a free agent by the Mets organization this past offseason. This season, he has made 26 relief appearances for Triple-A Syracuse. He is 3-3 with a 3.16 ERA, 1.436 WHIP, 5.5 BB/9, and a 9.5 K/9.
Alvarez has not appeared in a Major League game since 2015. Between 2014-2015, he made 31 relief appearances in the majors not recording a decision while posting a 7.39 ERA, 1.714 WHIP, 5.8 BB/9, and a 10.3 K/9.
With respect to Diehl, 28, he made five appearances for the Reds this season. He did not record a decision while posting an 11.12 ERA, 4.8 BB/9, and a 4.8 K/9. He has predominantly pitched in Triple-A, where he may be assigned with the Mets. In Triple-A this season, he is 2-1 with a 4.24 ERA, 1.114 WHIP, 3.1 BB/9, and an 11.6 K/9.
