Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reported on Monday, that left-handed pitching prospect Steven Matz had surgery in October to clean out a knee, as was acknowledged by Matz, after icing it after Monday’s workout.
In 2013, Matz, 22, started 21 games and was 5-6, with a 2.62 ERA, and 121 strikeouts in 106.1 innings with Savannah (A) before undergoing the procedure.
The lefty helped the Sand Gnats win the 2013 SAL Championship by pitching two dominating performances in both rounds of the playoffs and earned the victory in both series clinching games.
Rubin adds that Matz is likely to open 2014 at St. Lucie (A+).
The Mets announced on Monday that Steven Matz is scheduled to pitch in an intrasquad game Thursday at Tradition Field.
Let the games and the 2014 Spring Season begin. Lets Go Mets.
