MLB Pipeline has released their updated list of the top 30 prospects in the Mets farm system, and the most noticeable change is Peter Alonso usurping Andres Gimenez as the top prospect in the Mets organization. It should be noted this is not driven by Gimenez’s stock falling, but rather by Alonso’s stock rising.

In fact, MLB Pipeline believes Alonso will be the lone Mets prospect to have an impact in the majors next season. The outlet foresees Gimenez as not far behind with him being ready to make his debut in the 2020 season.

In many ways, Gimenez personifies the strength of the Mets system. Three of the Mets top five prospects are shortstops aged 20 years or younger. When you include Mark Vientos, four of the top five Mets prospects play on the left side of the infield and are all younger than 20 years old.

That top five also includes Shervyen Newton who was the biggest riser on this list having gone from unranked to the fifth best prospect in the system. Overall, Newton would be one of five new players to the top 10. This was partially the result of players like Chris Flexen and Luis Guillorme graduating from prospect status and partially because of the infusion of new talent with Ronny Mauricio, Simeon Woods Richardson, and Franklyn Kilome having joined the organization in the past year.

In fact, looking at the top 30 as a whole, there were 13 new additions. This would be due to the rise of some prospects like Tony Dibrell, the acquisition of prospects like Will Toffey, drafting players like Ryley Gilliam, and finally signing players like Mauricio as international free agents.

Looking at the specific tools, from a position player prospect, Gimenez rates the highest in the most categories. His hitting (60) and defense (60) regarded as the best in the organization. He is tied with Ali Sanchez as having the top defense. Speaking of Sanchez his throwing arm (65) is tied with Eric Hanhold‘s fastball as the best single tool in the Mets organization.

On the pitching front, it should come as little surprise with David Peterson being the top rated pitcher, he is rated as having some of the top pitching tools in the organization – slider (60), change-up (55), and control (60).

In addition to Peterson, Dibrell Anthony Kay, and Kyle Dowdy are regarded as having a 55 change-up. Junior Santos and Jordan Humphreys are also regarded as having 60 control. In terms of the curveball, both Ryley Gilliam and Thomas Szapucki having a pitch rated at 60.

Rounding out the top tools, Alonso has 60 power, and Desmond Lindsay has 60 speed.

Overall, MLB Pipeline’s top 30 is as follows:
