There was palpable excitement with Francisco Alvarez, Brett Baty, and Ronny Mauricio all beginning the season with Double-A Binghamton. That went to another level with them batting 2-3-4 in the lineup, and seeing the results, it is now at a fever pitch.

In the April 12 game against the Bowie Baysox, that trio led an offensive onslaught leading to the Rumble Ponies 9-4 victory. That trio combined for six of the nine RBI and five of the nine runs scored:

  • Alvarez 2-for-4, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI, BB
  • Baty 3-for-5, 2 R, 2 2B, 2 K
  • Mauricio 2-for-5, R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, SB

With his homer, Alvarez has now homered in all three games of the season. If you go back to the end of last season, Alvarez has now hit homers in four straight games. This is a player completely undaunted by Double-A, and it needs reminding that Alvarez is the youngest player in the Eastern League.

Alvarez almost had two, but his first inning single hit the wall. On the season, Alvarez is 7-for-13 with two doubles, three homers, and seven RBI. He is just absolutely hitting the cover off the ball with over five balls with an exit velocity over 100 MPH.

Behind him in the lineup is Baty. Baty had another big day as he continues to drive the ball in the air as opposed to hitting it into the ground. This marked his third three-hit game at the Double-A level in his career and the first of the season. No, he did not have an RBI, but he was on base three times leading to him scoring two runs in the game. On the season, Baty is 8-for-19 with three doubles, one homer, and an RBI.

While Baty was setting the table, Mauricio was driving in runs with three RBI on the night. Perhaps, the first RBI was the most special as he singled home both Alvarez and Baty to give the Rumble Ponies a 2-1 first inning lead.

In the game, Mauricio would also have his first homer and stolen base on the season. Overall, Mauricio has begun the year 6-for-19 with two doubles, a homer, and four RBI while stealing one base.

While Alvarez is the youngest player in the Eastern League, Mauricio is not that far behind being roughly seven months older. This is symbolic of not just how young this group of prospects are, but more importantly, how good they already are. In many ways, we are just seeing the beginning of what each of these players can be, and if they continue, we should see them doing this in Flushing sooner than anticipated.
