According to Steve Gelbs of SNY, the New York Mets intend to have top prospect Amed Rosario learn third base during the upcoming season as part of a change in organizational philosophy. Overall, the New York Mets organization now wants to expose all of their prospects to multiple positions to make them more versatile, and therefore more valuable.
It should be noted that the Mets intention is to have Rosario learn third base. This is not part of a plan to move Rosario off of shortstop. Indeed, such a move would make little sense as Rosario is widely regarded as the Mets best defensive shortstop prospect since Rey Ordonez.
We have already seen part of this plan be implemented with other players. For example, Gavin Cecchini was exposed to second base during the Arizona Fall League season. Of course, the main difference between Cecchini and Rosario is many believe Cecchini’s ultimate destination is second base whereas no one expects Rosario will play anywhere but shortstop in the majors.
It will be interesting to see how the Mets will implement this plan with some of their other prospects in the 2017 season.

With the log jam at nearly every position outside of relief pitcher, its nearly criminal to deprive us of this kid not being our starting short stop next year. This kid is like a Christmas present we’re all awaiting to open and see on the field in 2017. That said, hope we see him soon. Christmas in July anyone?
No harm in diversifying Rosario’s infield skills, especially on the same side of the infield. If anything, he will understand the 3rd baseman’s role better and many of the drills will only improve his ability to charge the ball and react quickly. Better to do this now than at the MLB level.
I always lament the Mets failure to convert Daniel Murphy to the catching position. I thought he was a natural.
With Cabrera signed for reasonable money through 2018 (albeit on a club option), and David Wright’s situation being what it is, and also the fact that the Mets don’t have a true 3B prospect anywhere near the majors (Flores and TJ Rivera can play 3rd base-ish) getting Rosario comfortable at 3B makes a ton of sense. 3B is a lot easier than SS, so if they wanted to get him to the bigs in ’18, they might be able to let Rosario play there for a year – or play there part time for a year – while he adjusts to the league, and not have to move Cabrera.
