Arizona Fall League (AFL)

Scottsdale (1-0) 5, Mesa (0-1) 4 Box Score

Despite a quartet of shortstops on the Scorpions roster, it was Gimenez who drew the opening day start at the position for the team and he did not disappoint. With the game tied 4-4 with two outs in the top of the ninth inning and a runner on first base, Gimenez lined a 1-2 pitch past the center fielder to drive in the go-ahead run for the Scorpions. He also impressed defensively as well converting all three opportunities that came his way including a sharp ground-ball off the bat of Alfonso Rivas.

Interestingly, catching prospect Ali Sanchez came into the game, as part of a double switch in the bottom of the ninth, as a defensive replacement at first base. It was his first game at the position in his entire professional career and occurred despite other more experienced first basemen in Alec Bohm and Patrick Mazeika still being on the bench. It will certainly be something to keep an eye on as the AFL season progresses.

No other Mets players saw game action, but it was announced that top pitching prospect, David Peterson, will get his first AFL start of the year on Saturday against the Glendale Desert Dogs.
