Binghamton Rumble Ponies SS  Andres Gimenez has been placed on the seven day Injured List retroactive to Monday. Gimenez had been plunked on the wrist by Portland Sea Dogs pitcher Dominic LoBrutto. At the moment, the full extent of his injury is unknown, and as a result, there is no timetable set for a possible return.

Through 45 games, Gimenez was hitting .232/.305/.333 with eight doubles, two triples, two homers, and 15 RBI. While Gimenez, the third youngest player in the league, had his struggles, he had been better of late. In the 10 games prior to the injury, he had posted a .341 OBP. With hand and wrist injuries being tricky, it will be difficutly to ascertain not only when he could come back, but also when he will be able to begin hitting again and showing off the developing power the Mets see in his bat.

With injuries, there are opportunities created for other players. Luis Carpio replaced Gimenez in Monday’s game. Carpio has overcome shoulder injuries in his career, and he has gotten his career back on track. It has earned him a promotion from St. Lucie to Binghamton, and now, it will lead to his getting more playing time at shortstop. So far this month, Carpio is 3-for-12 with three doubles and two RBI.

This should also open the door for Michael Paez, who has struggled at the plate this season. Since Gimenez was injured, he is 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI. In addition to Carpio and Paez, we will see who not only gets a chance to play but also takes advantage of an unforeseen opportunity.
