The Leones del Caracas have signed Asdrubal Cabrera to finish out the season with the team in the Venezuelan Winter League. Cabrera received permission from the Mets to play and will make his debut on Sunday.
According to the team he has been training with them for weeks and has just been waiting for permission from the Mets, whom he signed with on December 11th. There are only four days left in the regular season but six of the eight teams do make the playoffs.
This will be the first time Cabrera has played in winter ball since 2012 when he played for the Caracas, he also played for them in 2010 and 2011. He joins minor league pitcher Jose Celas and minor league outfielder Hengelbert Rojas as players in the Mets system on the Leones roster.
The 30-year old Cabrera hit .265/.315/.430 with 15 homeruns, 58 RBI, and 28 doubles in 143 games during the 2015 season for the Tampa Bay Rays.
Earlier this week it was announced that the Mets newest free agent signing Alejandro De Aza has signed to play in the Dominican Winter League playoffs.
