Baseball America published their new mock draft via Jim Callis this morning – their second of a series of four that will be released as we approach Draft Day 2013. In their first mock, they had the Mets selecting D.J. Peterson.

Well, I’m not exactly behind the Mets drafting a college pitcher in this draft – especially yet another right-handed arm. The only pitcher that I have made an exception for in my draft hopes is Braden Shipley. Outside of that, I hope that we look towards grabbing a solid OF prospect such as Hunter Renfroe, Phillip Ervin, or the two Austins (Wilson/Meadows).

But for those of you interested in Ryne Stanek, here’s a little run down on the young man. He’s 6’4 / 190 lbs and was previously drafted by the Mariners in 2010 (3rd round) and is projected to be a first round pick this year. Stanek is a power arm out of Arkansas, boasting a plus fastball and slider already. His fastball sits in the mid 90’s and touches as high as 97 MPH with solid sink, while his slider thrives in the mid 80’s with exceptional late break. He was a top prospect coming out of High School and his fastball has gained a few miles since then – only increasing his stock.

He also throws a curveball and changeup that could potentially pan out to be average MLB pitches – especially the curveball. Some scouts believe he will end up being a dominant closer for many years as a floor – which is pretty damn impressive. He gets into trouble when he relies on his slider too much, which he had a tendency to do in college. In addition, his strikeout numbers are low for a player with his raw stuff (59 strikeouts in 67.0 innings) which raises a few eyebrows.

Here’s a video showcasing Stanek:
