Savannah Sand Gnats shortstop Luis Guillorme was ranked the 18th best prospect in the South Atlantic League according to Baseball America’s Top 20 list. The accolades keep coming for the 21-year old after being named the SAL Most Valuable Player and receiving the Mets Sterling Award for Savannah as well.

Guillorme finished second in the league with his .318 average and his .972 fielding percentage was the best among shortstop in the SAL. He was great in the clutch in 2015 hitting .353/.416/.383 with runners in scoring position. Here is what JJ Cooper had to say about him:

  • Everyone in the SAL was impressed with Guillorme’s feel for the game. He’s a reliable defender with excellent hands and solid range.
  • He has good bat control, controls the strike zone and draws walks.
  • Many scouts are concerned about how Guillorme profiles going forward. He has bottom-of-the-scale power and little strength, and he doesn’t project to get a whole lot stronger.
  • As a well-rounded shortstop with a solid understanding of the game, he should settle in as a utility infielder at worst.

The knock on Luis has always been will he hit enough to be an everyday player and while that remains to be seen he has definitely improved at the plate. He goes the other way very well and has a nice line drive stroke. The defense is already there for Guillorme who has continued to get better with the bat every year. I recently did an interview with him which you can read here.
