Baseball America ranked their Top 10 rookies from what could be the greatest class of the generation with Carlos Correa rightfully at the top. Mets big right-hander Noah Syndergaard is the first pitcher on the list and #5 overall. Michael Conforto joins his teammate on the list ranking #7 ahead of Addison Russell and Joc Pederson.
Syndergaard had a fantastic rookie year leading all rookies with 166 strikeouts and a 1.05 WHIP (80 IP min.). He averaged 96.5 MPH on his fastball, which was the hardest for a rookie starting pitcher in the 8 years Pitch FX has been tracking pitches.
Noah finished 17th in all of baseball with his 1.86 BB/9, pretty impressive for a rookie who’s minor league career BB/9 is 2.6. His xFIP was the 7th best in MLB at 2.91, right ahead of teammate Jacob deGrom‘s 2.92.
Conforto was as advertised with the bat in the Majors, for the exception of his power to the opposite field which has vastly improved this season. He had the 5th best SLG% among MLB rookies at .506 and 6th best wRC+ at 134.
The biggest surprise from Michael was his excellence in the field where he had the 7th most defensive runs saved (9) in MLB (in LF). He also showed off his cannon in the Majors picking up six outfield assists and had 15 overall this year.
