In addition to Baseball America ranking the top 100 prospects in baseball, the outlet is also ranking the top players at each position. After looking at the aforementioned Top 100 rankings, it may come as some surprise Peter Alonso is currently rated as the second best first base prospect in baseball.

On the Top 100 rankings, Alonso was third behind Astros prospect Yordan Alvarez and Rays prospect Brendan McKay. In the first base rankings, Alvarez remained ahead of Alonso, but McKay did not even crack the list of the top 20 first base prospects. The reason for the discrepancy is McKay’s ranking on the Top 100 list is because of his pitching. His playing first base is partially due to the Rays attempting to allow him to prove himself to be the next Shohei Ohtani.

The end result is Alonso being regarded as the second best first base prospect in baseball. This should come as no surprise with his strong 2018 season and the expectation he will contribute at the Major League level in 2019.

Previously, Baseball America rated Francisco Alvarez and Tomas Nido among the top catching prospects in baseball. Along with Alonso, the Mets now have three prospects among the top at their position. As Baseball America continues publishing their rankings, we should see other Mets prospects ranked at the top of their position.
