Ben Badler and Baseball America announced their first update of the top 100 prospects of 2021 on Tuesday. Their first pre-season ranks had three Mets fall in the prestigious category back in January. As we roll into May, that number stays the same, but this time with a new entrant who finds himself sitting at No. 100.

#100 Pete Crow-Armstrong- St. Lucie Mets

Crow-Armstrong got the bump to the top 100 after playing in only six games with the St. Lucie Mets. The top prospect drafted out of high school is showing his competitive skill set very early on in his career. Through 24 at-bats, Crow-Armstrong is hitting .417/.563/.500 with four RBIs, six runs, and two stolen bases.

Pete’s power numbers are low, but as he matures through the minors, he will get bigger and stronger, certainly boosting his ranking in the process. He is a plus-level defender in center field who can track down fly balls with ease due to his incredible speed. His above-average arm has already led to two outfield assists and a double play. Crow-Armstrong currently sits as the Mets’ No. 4 prospect but will most likely get the number to No. 3 after the injury to Matt Allan.

#57 Ronny Mauricio- Brooklyn Cyclones

In the pre-season polling, Mauricio found himself sitting as the No. 65 prospect in baseball going into 2021. The 20-year-old switch-hitting shortstop is off to a hot start with the Brooklyn Cyclones and has jumped eight spots in the rankings putting him at No. 57.

Going into the season, Mauricio had only totaled seven homers and thirty-six doubles in 697 at-bats in his minor league career. This year through 24 at-bats, Ronny has slashed .333/.385/.875 with three round-trippers and four doubles, giving him an OPS of 1.260. It’s very early into the season, but it seems Mauricio is finally tapping into his power potential at the dish, most likely the reason for the big jump on the top 100 board. There are many questions about Mauricio’s future position with the Mets organization, but with that aside, he can be an impactful bat at the top of the lineup.

#40 Francisco Álvarez- St. Lucie Mets

Álvarez has made the most significant jump of any Mets prospect since 2020, going from No. 67 on the list to the 40th slot here in May. This jump is for good measure though, as he’s been nothing short of amazing to start 2021. Through seven games, Álvarez is mashing a .571/.667/.857 slash line with three doubles and homer over that time.

What’s more impressive about Álvarez is his three strikeouts and nine walks, an incredible display of strike zone knowledge for a 19-year-old. Álvarez is solid behind the plate, displaying a fantastic arm as he threw two runners out in five attempts so far. His blocking is called into question, but the switch to the hybrid style of catching could help in the long run. It may be a while before we see Álvarez in Queens, but it will definitely be worth the wait.

Throughout the season, Baseball America will frequently update its prospect rankings. As for now, Brett Baty sits outside the top 100 list, but if he continues the way he’s playing to start the 2021 season, he’ll get the bump in no time. Unfortunately, Matt Allan, who sat at No. 98 on the list, got bumped off due to the Tommy John surgery.
