It had been a struggle for slugger Billy Amick since his promotion to Triple-A. Entering Wednesday night’s game, Amick was 2-for-21 with 11 strikeouts and only one walk across his first six games with the Syracuse Mets. However, in Syracuse’s 11-1 thumping of Lehigh Valley, Amick broke out and slugged two homers while posting more hits than he had in total since his promotion.
Amick went 3-for-5 with the aforementioned two homers, four RBIs, and no strikeouts. His OPS raised from .286 to .827 in one night. It was a performance that the 23-year-old former Tennessee Volunteer will surely want to build off of.
With the two homers and four runs driven in, Amick is now up to 33 homers and 100 RBIs on the season. He has hit 10 homers and driven in 28 runs across 19 games and 72 at-bats since joining the organization prior to the trade deadline from the Minnesota Twins in the A.J. Minter deal.
The total home run figure (33) is top-seven in all of the minor leagues and he is now one of six minor leaguers to have at least 100 RBIs on the season. The last time a Mets minor leaguer had at least 100 RBIs in a single season is 2018 (Pete Alonso).
Despite the prolific season, where Amick now owns an overall OPS close to .850, concerns about his strikeout rate (30.3% entering Wednesday) have him off most major media outlets top-30 Mets organizational rankings. Regardless of that, it has been a superb season for the Mooresville, North Carolina native. Not a bad return for a reliever on an expiring contract.
