The Binghamton Mets, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Mets, announced on Thursday that the team will be undergoing a complete re-brand, which will begin in 2017. The team’s new nickname will be selected through a “name the team” contest, which will be open to the public, beginning on April 7.
Back on December 28, Binghamton completed the sale of the team to John Hughes of Evans Street Baseball Inc., a group that pledged to keep the team in New York. Previously, rumors that the team was almost guaranteed to relocate to Wilmington, Deleware spread rapidly.
Now, Hughes is doing more than just keeping a local tradition in Binghamton. Along with the re-brand, NYSEG Stadium will receive a much needed renovation. The field will be completely re-done, to go along with an expanded merchandise store, a new party deck in right field, and an updated right field gate, which will allow for a more convenient entry into the ballpark.
The Mets will stay in Binghamton for the foreseeable with a player agreement that runs through the 2020 season. The B’Mets lease with NYSEG Stadium last until the end of 2021.
For now, though, much of the focus surrounding Binghamton baseball is on 2016, and putting another winning product on the field. After finishing with the third best record in the Eastern League a year ago, the B-Mets have every chance to improve. With Pedro Lopez back at the helm for his fifth season, and a slew of top prospects set to pass through the town of 47,000, the Mets should once again play consistent, competitive baseball.
The B-Mets will open their season on April 7, when they oppose the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Opening Night will be celebrated with a wide array of events and activities, which include the ceremonial first pitch, to be tossed by New York Mets great, Edgardo Alfonzo.
What should the new nickname be?
I would suggest Binghamton Redskins, Binghamton Canadiens, Binghamton Jazz, Binghamton Yankees, or Binghamton Angels of Binghamton. π
I like Binghamton Jazz out of those options, what would the mascot be though? And what about the Binghamton Angels of New York?
The mascot could be a saxophone or a contrabass. π
A Mets farmteam will never be called “Angels of somewhat”…
But “Binghamton Bees” might be a serious option. Or “Triplets”, due to the Triple Cities.
I would prefer “The Strongest (of Binghamton)”. There is a Bolivian soccer team with that name, and I love it in its modesty π
If they stick with the Mets colors orange and blue, how about “Binghamton Oranges”? Would be a funny mascot!
I like Binghamton Oranges, doesn’t have a great ring to it but is fitting. And considering that Savannah went with Bananas a fruit is definitely possible I think. Won’t be the Bees because that is already a AAA team.
Oops, yes, you are right about the Bees. Fruits are okay, don’t forget the Scottsdale Fighting Artichokes π
I like that one, hadn’t heard it. How about the Binghamton Tangerines? Tangerines are yummy and need more awareness.
Is there any fruit that is orange and blue? I mean, by nature? π
Or we combine all the ideas and call the team “Strongest New York triplet orange Angels of Binghamton”? Abbreviation “SNYTOAB”, which would lead to the “Binghamton Snytoabs”! π Sounds futuristic…
Not sure but I found this searching on google, a bird that is orange and blue so I’m going with Binghamton Blue Birds
The bluebird is quite beautiful, and it is orange and blue. And “Blue Bird” makes a nice alliteration with “Binghamton”. I like that idea! “Binghamton Bluebirds” (or “Blue Birds”)!
Contest is ovah!
how about the Binghamton Browns…feets don’t fail me now
