In a conversation with fans on twitter, Brandon Welch said he expects to get back on the mound sometime this week. He hasn’t gotten on the field lately because of shoulder impingement and tendonitis type issues in his throwing shoulder.
Welch, a right-handed pitcher from North Palm Beach, Florida, was selected by the Mets in the fifth round of the 2012 MLB draft out of Palm Beach State College. He must be eager to get on the hill and showcase what he has to offer the organization; he was only able to throw one inning in Kingsport last season, allowing one run on two hits.
While he didn’t start pitching until his freshman year of college (he previously was an outfielder), he has flashed a great fastball-slider combination that the organization is hoping he can be consistent with. When healthy, Welch has been able to work his fastball into the mid-90s with a power slider. Since he only has two pitches, he profiles as a reliever, and showed great control for someone who hasn’t spent much time on a mound before.
When he does get back on the mound and into game situations, we’ll get to see if his velocity can appear day-in and day-out. His trek through the minor league will be dependent on his health, and I’m interested to see how he does in his first actual year of professional baseball.
