Las Vegas 51s outfielder Bryce Brentz was removed from Sunday’s game after fouling a pitch off his foot. After further examination, it was discovered Brentz sustained a broken toe, and he was placed on the seven day disabled list. It is expected he will remain there for the next four to six weeks.

Before injuring his toe, Brentz was hitting .274/.339/.547 with eight doubles, seven homers, and 21 RBI.

The injury does leave Las Vegas scrambling a bit to round out their outfield. Brentz, who was claimed off waivers on the eve of the regular season, was brought on as needed outfield depth. He has proved to be more than that starting in 29 of Las Vegas’ first 31 games.

Yesterday, Ty Kelly played just his fourth game of the season in left field, and given his early season production, he stands to get the bulk of the playing time in Brentz’s absence. With Kelly playing the outfield, this create an opportunity for another player to get more playing time. It should be interesting to see which player takes advantage of the opportunity created by Brentz’s absence.
