Eighteen years ago to the day, the Brooklyn Cyclones won the NYPL Championship Series opener against the Williamsport Crosscutters, and they were getting ready for a clinching game back home in Brooklyn that was never played.

As a result, Brooklyn was named the 2001 co-champions with Williamsport. They’d return to the championship series in 2003, 2007, and 2010 getting swept each time. That meant this year was not just the second year Brooklyn not just would win a game in the championship series, but it would be the first ever time since their move to Brooklyn they’d have an opportunity to become sole NYPL Champions.

Brooklyn got off to a quick second inning lead against the Lowell Spinners as Jake Mangum would drive home Brett Baty. For his part, first round pick Baty would have a very good series going 3-for-9 at the plate with two runs, a double, and two walks.

Magnum would then score on an Antoine Duplantis RBI ground out. Magnum and Duplantis would be heard from again in this game.

Unfortunately, Brooklyn would give the lead right back. With two outs and runners at first and second, Brooklyn starter Nate Jones allowed an RBI single. On the play, Ranfy Adon threw the ball away allowing an unearned run to score tying the game.

In the do-or-die game, Brooklyn managed Edgardo Alfonzo gave the ball to third round pick Matthew Allan who was absolutely electric for three scoreless innings hitting 97 MPH with his fastball.

The pitcher the Mets designed their entire draft strategy to get finished the season with a 1.76 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 15.1 innings pitched.

Mitch Ragan relieved Allan, and he’d allow a homer to the very first batter he faced Marino Campana, to put Brooklyn down 3-2 with just nine outs left in their season.

As Mangum got a one out base hit in the bottom of the seventh, there was a chance, especially given his speed on the base paths. We’d soon see him flying around the bases when Duplantis hit a game tying triple.

Duplantis really came up huge in this series. In the first game of this series, Duplantis hit an eighth inning sacrifice fly which would prove to be the game winning run. Earlier in the game, he drove home a run, and in the seventh, he drove home the tying run.

When the very next batter, Yoel Romero, singled home Duplantis, it meant Duplantis would score the game and series winning run.

It was then up to Andrew Edwards to record the six out save. Despite Edwards having a 6.00 ERA against Lowell this year, and having runners on first and second in the ninth he’d get the job done.

Suddenly, Brooklyn would have their first ever solo share of the NYPL title. Looking through the annals of thus franchise’s history, the last time they were the solo winners of the title was 1986, which was back when they were the St. Catharine’s Blue Jays and part of the Toronto Blue Jays system. Winning in 1986 and 2019 is a feat the Major League club endeavors to replicate this year.
