The Brooklyn Cyclones have announced their coaching staff for the 2023 season as they seek to make the playoffs for a second consecutive season. This year, it will be Chris Newell who takes over from Luis Rivera. With this being the most notable change, the coaching staff will be:

  • Chris Newell, Manager
  • John Vaughn, Bench Coach
  • Victor Ramos, Pitching Coach
  • Richie Benes, Hitting Coach
  • Juan Loyo, Development Coach
  • Paul Gonzales, Athletic Trainer
  • Drew Skrocki, Performance Coach

Newell has received the promotion from bench coach to manager. This is his fifth year in the New York Mets organization. This will be his second managerial assignment with his previously having been the manager of the Complex League in 2021.

Benes returns for his second consecutive season as the Cyclones hitting coach, and he has served in that role in three of the past four seasons. He and Skrocki join Newell as the only returning members of the 2022 coaching staff.

Vaughn enters his third season in the Mets organization with this being his first in a coaching role. In 2021, he was a Player Development Associate, and last season, he was a Minor League Analytics Associate with the Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies. Last season, his primary responsibilities were video and analytics.

Ramos enters his fifth year in the Mets organization. He has previously served as the pitching coach for Single-A St. Lucie and in the Dominican Summer League. He was part of the Team Puerto Rico coaching staffs in the previous World Baseball Classics but will not be part of the staff for this year’s event.

Loyo, 23, returns to Brooklyn after retiring as a player after the 2022 season. Last season, he played in only six games for Brooklyn going 4-for-13 (.308) at the plate with an RBI. He is now the fourth former Cyclone to return to serve as a coach for the team.
