As reported by our own Mike Mayer of (also of Metsmerized Online), Calvin Ziegler will miss all of the 2023 season with a torn right quadricep. Ziegler has not pitched yet in 2023 as he was recovering from surgery to remove bone spurs in March. Unfortunately after suffering a second injury, he will not be shut down for the remainder of 2023.

Ziegler, the 20-year old right-handed pitcher, was drafted at No. 46 overall by the New York Mets in the second round of the 2021 MLB draft out of TNXL Academy in Ocoee, FL.

The 2022 season has marked the only year he has pitched professionally since being drafted. During that season with Low-A St. Lucie, he was 0-6 with a 4.44 ERA over 16 games pitched. He struck out 70 and had a WHIP of 1.31 over the course of 46 2/3 innings pitched.

While control was an issue going back to when he was drafted, the intrigue with him came with his ability to miss bats. He had an astounding 40.7 K% and 36 Whiff%.

Entering the season, Ziegler was ranked by MMN as the Mets 10th best prospect. He is currently ranked by MLB.com as the Mets’ No. 7 prospect.

During his time with St. Lucie, his fastball velocity averaged 92-94 mph and topped around 96.5 mph. He curveball sits in the low-80’s that had opposing batters hitting only .032 against it. He also has a splitter that averages 83-85 mph.

Ziegler will miss the rest of 2023 as he continues to recover from bone spur removal surgery and now the torn quadricep. But when he is able to return, Ziegler will need to work on his control, which is where he has battled most in the Florida State League.
