The Australian Winter League kicked off on Thursday morning with two Mets prospects in action for the Sydney Blue Sox.

Before we get to the game, it’s important to note that it was announced earlier this week that Mets big-time catcher prospect Francisco Alvarez will not be playing in Australia after all. The 19-year-old will spent time with his family in Venezuela instead.

The Blue Sox got more bad news before the game, when they found out their star Manny Ramirez had a minor injury and would miss the opener.

Despite all of that, the Blue Sox took down the Melbourn Aces, 12-6 on Opening Day. Mets prospect Carlos Cortes hit cleanup and played second base for Sydney. The Mets No. 20 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, went 2-for-3 with a double, walk, and knocked in two runs.

Mets prospect Manny Rodriguez played shortstop and batted eighth, he went 0-for-5 with a strikeout.

The Mets have two other minor leaguers on the Blue Sox roster, right-handed pitcher Adam Oller and left-handed pitcher Andrew Mitchell.

Former big leaguer Delmon Young went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the Aces.
