In an effort to continue to add more depth to the to the upper levels of the bullpen, the Mets signed Right-Handed Pitcher, Chad Smith to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training.

Smith has struggled since making his MLB debut in 2022 with the Rockies after pitching his way through the Marlins and Rockies systems. Smith has pitched in 25 MLB games and possesses a 7.11 ERA (63 ERA+) across 31.2 innings. This past season, Smith spent most of this time in Triple-A where he pitched in 35 games to a 7.53 ERA. He threw only 13.2 innings in 10 MLB games 2023.

The Mets got a good look at Smith on April 14, 2023, when he had his longest outing of the season (2.2 innings) giving up one run on a Starling Marte double in a 17-6 Mets win.

Smith’s production history isn’t extremely encouraging, but maybe the Mets finally hit on a Christmas Eve signing after striking out the last few years in Betances and Correa.
