In a flurry of roster moves today the Binghamton Mets announced that speedy outfielder Champ Stuart has been promoted to their roster from the St. Lucie Mets. The 23-year old was hitting .265/.347/.407 with career highs in doubles (9), triples (6), and home runs with six already this year. He has also stolen 25 bases and been caught only three times.
The big question for Champ coming into the year was if he will ever cut down on the strikeouts enough to be a leadoff hitter or even hit in the upper minors. This year his strikeout rate is down to 30.1 % from last year’s 36.9 %. But he is also walking less and he was repeating the Florida State League. The power numbers being up are certainly intriguing although Champ is a guy you would like to see more focused on getting on base.
Stuart was the Mets 6th round pick of the 2013 draft out of Brevard College.
The B-Mets made three other roster moves including outfielder Jayce Boyd being placed on the disabled list retroactive to July 5th. Reliever Beck Wheeler was sent back to the Las Vegas 51s and catcher Raywilly Gomez was activated off the disabled list.

Beginning to wonder if the end is near for Boyd…
I believe Champ is a major league caliber baseball player.
No idea if means 25th man or starting leadoff guy buy I believe he’ll wear a major league uniform.
I thought so when I first heard of his injury this year. He doesn’t belong in the OF, that is for sure.
I agree, the difference between him being the last guy on the bench in the mold of Endy Chavez or can be a catalyst at the top of the order remains to be seen. I’m still pretty skeptical because of the high K rates.
Cautiously excited about Stuart. I think at some point he gets called up to do what EYJ did last year for us (probably not this year, but maybe down the stretch next year). Anybody with 80 speed is exciting, but I’m happy to see him starting to hit. Oh course, he was repeating the level, so we’ll see how he adjusts to AA. The Ks are concerning, but they are down and he still has plenty of time to improve.
Great points! At some point his speed guarantees an appearance to the show but its hard to get real excited about a guy who struck out 30% of the time after repeating A+.
agreed! ESPECIALLY since he is repeating A+
I think it is. I had hopes for him but his BA (along with the rest of the OF at AA) is abysmal! Both him and Katz are about to get squeezed out.
is his range that bad?
Range and he can’t throw at all
oh wow! That isn’t good. He’s definitely getting squeezed then. I heard both Garcia and Thompson (2 players GUARANTEED to be promoted to Binghamton) will both move to 1B eventually and Alonso just reported to Brooklyn. He has no chance of returning to 1B.
