The hits were flying and the base runners were all over once again at First Data Field as the St. Lucie Mets win a slugfest beating the Florida Fire Frogs 10-9 with a walk-off for an ending. The game featured 19 runs, 25 hits, wild pitches and multiple hit batsman while lasting ten innings as the Mets grabbed a big lead, squandered it, and got it back in the end in exciting fashion.

The starter for the Mets was right-hander Tony Dibrell, ranked by MetsMinors as the 15th best prospect in the system. Dibrell worked about a double to throw a scoreless first with help from catcher Nick Meyer throwing out an attempted base stealer, his eighth of the season against a total of 16 attempts through 13 games played.

Dibrell appeared to struggle throughout the night with his command, appearing to leave too many pitches up in the zone, while also showing glimpses of his talent and success when keeping the ball down and utilizing his breaking ball for big outs.  Below is video compilation of all three Dibrell strikeouts on the night.

Dibrell allowed a run in the second and two runs in the third inning before settling down to pitch a scoreless forth. Stadium radar had him sitting 88-89 MPH and topping out at 90 MPH on his fastball, mixing in off speed pitches dipping as low as 74 MPH. In the fifth Dibrell allowed a leadoff walk and that would be it for him on the night, departing with the team leading 8-3 and no longer having the chance to earn the victory.

Final line on Dibrell was 4 innings, 7 hits allowed, 4 earned runs, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.

The Mets offense started rolling in the second inning, started by a Jeremy Vasquez walk and error taking him to second on a failed pickoff attempt.  After a Carlos Cortes ground out the star of the night, utility player Cody Bohanek, put the Mets on the board with an RBI double. Catcher Nick Meyer followed up with an opposite field RBI single to give the Mets their first lead of the night.  Below is video of Bohanek double.

Nick Meyer would later come around the score on a Hansel Moreno sacrifice fly making it 3-1 Mets at the time. Below is video of the sac fly by Moreno, who throughout the night was making some of the hardest contact he’s made all season on the ball.

After the Fire Frogs tied it in the top of the third inning off of Dibrell, the Mets exploded for five runs in the bottom half all started by outfielder Matt Winaker who came into the game as a replacement for Jacob Zanon with a single.  Zanon appeared to have had a shakeup in the outfield the inning prior running after a ball hit to the wall. Quinn Brodey walked, followed by an RBI single for first baseman Jeremy Vasquez. Below is video of the RBI single by Vasquez.

After a Carlos Cortes single it was Cody Bohanek who came through again with a single scoring two runs, giving him three RBIs in three innings. Below is video of the Bohanek single.

For a second consecutive inning Hansel Moreno would later come to bat and drive a ball deep into the outfield for another sacrifice fly, video below.

The Mets had an 8-3 lead but the Fire Frogs began to eat away at the advantage off Dibrell and relievers Max Kuhns, making his season debut, along with Conner O’Neil, Joseph Shaw and Blake Taylor to eventually tie and then take the lead in the top of the 10th with help from the new extra inning rules of having a runner start on second base.

However, in the bottom of the 10th, the Mets started with Matt Winaker being placed on second.  After a Quinn Brodey pop out Jeremy Vasquez walked setting up Carlos Cortes who came through with an opposite field single to drive in the tying run. Video below.

The night would then fittingly end with its star throughout as Cody Bohanek ended it with a walk off single opposite field past a diving second baseman scoring pinch runner Luis Carpio with the winning run, video below.

Bohanek finished going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBIs, now hitting .333 on the season and even made some solid plays defensively at third base.

Jeremy Vasquez was on base five times with a single, three walks and a HBP.

Cortes finished 2-for-5 including that big game tying single in the 10th as he continues to see more of his hard hit balls dropping to improve his average.

Blake Taylor was credited with the win going one inning, the 1oth, giving up one unearned run, two hits and a strikeout.

These same two teams will be back at it tomorrow afternoon to conclude the series.
