The New York Mets would select two shortstops among their first two picks in the 2023 June draft. The first was Colin Houck, the 32nd overall pick, out of Parkview High School in Lilburn, GA. The second was A.J. Ewing, the team’s second fourth round selection out of Springboro High School in Springboro, OH.

After signing, both players would be assigned to the Florida Coast League. In their second game as professionals, each would record their first base hit.

With Houck being the higher level pick, he was batting second in the order and playing shortstop. Ewing played second and batted ninth.

In the fourth inning, Houck hit an opposite field hot shot to second. Johnny Olmstead, the FCL Marlins second baseman, made a diving play in the hole, but he was too late to be able to get Houck at first or get Kellum Clark at first. However, Olmstead was able to get Carlos Sanchez out, who was trying to score from second on the infield single.

So far, Houck has played two games for the FCL Mets. He is 1-for-5 with an RBI. He also has two walks against one strikeout.

In the sixth inning, Ewing pulled a line drive through the hole for his first career hit. After recording his first career hit, he would then record his first career stolen base. Unfortunately, he would be stranded on second.

Like Houck, Ewing has played in two games. He is 1-for-2 with a run, two walks, and a strikeout. He has been successful in his only stolen base attempt of the season.

Another 2023 draft pick, Boston Baro, started this game and played third base. He was 0-for-2 with a strikeout. The eighth round draft pick out of Capistrano Valley High School in Mission Viejo, CA has played two games going 1-for-5 with a run, double, and walk.

Jake Zitella, the Mets 16th round pick out of St Charles East High School in St. Charles, IL was the DH in the game. He was 0-f0r-2 with a walk and a strikeout. In his first two games, he is 1-for-5 with two runs, a walk, and strikeout.
