The Brooklyn Cyclones took on the Hudson Valley Renegades in their home opener on Tuesday night at the newly renamed Maimonides Park in Coney Island. Fans crowded the stands for the first time since the Cyclones hoisted the championship trophy back in 2019. Not only did fans get baseball back in Brooklyn, but they also witnessed the number two and number five prospects in the system, Ronny Mauricio and Brett Baty.

Ronny Mauricio SS: 1-for-4, 2 SO, .333/.375/.689

Mauricio didn’t have his best night at the dish but managed to extend his hitting streak to ten straight games. Ronny shows all the signs of being a fantastic hitter for the New York Mets organization, but limiting the strikeouts will be crucial for his progression in the long run.

The Cyclones faced a quality arm in Hayden Wesneski, a tall right-hander with an upper 90’s fastball and good arsenal of off-speed. Mauricio struck out and got his lone hit off of Wesneski, showing he can make in-game adjustments. As the season progresses, Ronny’s pitch selection will improve along with his ability to hit better pitching. Cyclones fans should be excited because Mauricio has a lot more to offer in Brooklyn.

Brett Baty 3B: 2-for-4, R, .371/.489/.975

Baty continues to impress not only the fans in Brooklyn after his two-hit performance but the Mets organization. After Tuesday night’s game, Baty finds himself number two in the High-A East division in batting average, just behind Ruben Cardenas, who sits at .375.

Since his short stint in Brooklyn back in 2019, Baty has seemed to turn a corner and found his swing here in 2021. He’s very patient at the plate, working nine walks in ten games, allowing his batting average and on-base percentage to skyrocket. Hitting out of the clean-up spot, Baty has seen his production number pump up to, driving in ten and scoring three. Baty still needs some development against breaking balls and higher velocity fastballs, but once he progresses, he should move fast through the system.

While Joe Genord may not be considered a prospect for the New York Mets, he had the fans rise to their feet as he blasted a clutch two-run bomb into the Coney Island night. This season so far, Genord is hitting .308/.341/.667 with an OPS of 1.008 and four round-trippers. A fantastic start that is certainly flying under the radar.

Some of the other Mets prospects didn’t fare as well on Tuesday night, both Jake Mangum and Antoine Duplantis were held hitless, combining for two strikeouts. The Cyclones lost a thrilling opening night battle 4-3 bringing their season record to 4-8. Brooklyn will be back at it again Wednesday night against Hudson Valley at 6:35 in Coney Island.
