David Aardsma has inked a minor league deal to join the New York Mets organization. The hurler will initially be reporting to Triple-A Las Vegas, but with how much Terry Collins has been using his bullpen at the major league level, it’s only a matter of time before he makes his way to Flushing.

The right-hander has been a reliever for the duration of his professional career, and most recently appeared in the major leagues with the New York Yankees in 2012. He appeared in one game, giving up a solo home run and striking out a batter in his lone inning. The Yankees released him earlier last month, but immediately found a contract with the Miami Marlins. He was released last week after exercising his opt-out clause, and the Mets have begun to make a habit of trying to find value out of recently released players. In 10 appearances (14 innings pitched) for Miami’s Triple-A affiliate in New Orleans, he went 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 12 strikeouts

Aardsma owns a career 4.22 ERA in 266.2 innings pitched (255 appearances). His career K/9 is 9.1, but his BB/9 stands at 5.1. He experienced his most success in the big leagues with the Seattle Mariners, appearing in 126 games from 2009-2010. While he ended up with a 3-12 record, he was very successful with a 2.90 ERA and 69 saves, including a 9.6 K/9.

The Mets hope Aardsma will eventually be able to provide more support to the back of the bullpen. He’s yet another veteran with closing experience, and more importantly, a fresh arm.
