According to a report by Kristie Ackert of the Daily News, help in the form of Jacob deGrom and Rafael Montero could be just weeks away for the Mets bullpen.

Ackert spoke with Mets assistant general manager John Ricco who said that “we are getting to the point where it’s probably weeks as opposed to months,” before they start tapping into the crop of young arms the Mets have in the minors.

“Ultimately that will be Sandy (Alderson’s) decision. But, I think we’re getting close.”

The Mets could certainly use the help sooner rather than later.

The Mets are fresh off of their seventh blown save in 13 chances this season, and own the worst save percentage in the majors.

Ricco said that one of their priorities is to make sure that when the young arms arrive, that they are going to actually help.

“The bigger factor is their development,” Ricco said. “They will be ready to come up here when they have done everything they needed to do down there.”

Of the group who was discussed, deGrom seems to be the one who is the most polished. Currently, he sports a 4-0 record with a 1.89 ERA and 1.17 WHIP for Triple-A Las Vegas. Scouts and on-field personnel consider deGrom to be better-suited for the bullpen at the major league level than Montero, the article says.

“His performance has been there,” Ricco said. “But you look at his history, he has less time as a starter than the other guys. There are still things clearly he is working on, but his performance has been the best.”

Ricco repeated what Sandy Alderson said on Monday that it’s not necessary that each pitcher (deGrom and Montero) works out of the bullpen before coming up.

“No, we’ve talked about it and it is possible we may do that,” Ricco said, “but this is not a prerequisite.”

Coupled with the recent buzz of Jenrry Mejia possibly going to the bullpen, it certainly appears that two more pieces that have been tied to the Mets future are on their way. It may very well be that we see both Montero (as a starter) and deGrom (as a reliever) make their Mets debuts before this month is over.
