Prior to Wednesday Mets matinee, Assistant GM John Ricco spoke with WOR 710 AM and discussed Paul Depodesta’s thoughts on when would be perfect time for Noah Syndergaard, Rafael Montero and Jacob deGrom to be promoted to the bigs.

“The way Paul DePodesta has talked about it, and I agree with him, is that we want to bring them up when they really don’t have anything left to prove or work on in Triple-A, because that means they can help us win with their talent.” Ricco continued, “Notwithstanding, we’d like to pitch better out of the bullpen [at the big-league level], but rushing one of those guys and putting on pressure and creating a situation where they’re the savior is not something we’re looking to do.”

According to Ricco, Montero has been working on “the little things,” such as holding runners on at first base and fielding his position, which is what the organization asked him to do when he left Spring Training.

Regarding if Syndergaard should be considered for the bullpen, Ricco added, “The conversations we’ve had internally indicate all options are open.”

“We look at all guys individually and do what’s best for them, but viewed against the backdrop of what they can do for the big-league team. It’s fairly complex situation, ” says Ricco.

It seems like at this point even if the Mets need the extra help, Depodesta does not feel that the three young arms are fully ready for a promotion. It can be true that maybe Thor and Montero have to be more dominate in their starts, but as for deGrom, he is literally out-pitching them both and it’s not like he is having a lucky streak, it actually started in spring training against big league batters where he was almost unhittable.

My sense is that they keep Syndergaard and Montero until at least June before they will even consider promoting them, but that deGrom has a better shot of going up sooner, especially if he continues to pitch the way he has lately and at that point he may not have anything left to prove.
