The Salt River Rafters edged the Scottsdale Surprise 2-1 today behind the production from Mets prospects Dominic Smith and Gavin Cecchini. Smith went 3 for 3 with a RBI and walk while playing first base and batting third. Two of the hits and the walk were against a left-handed pitcher.
In three games this year Smith is now 6 for 8 with two doubles, RBI and five walks. He was the Florida State Player of the Year for the St. Lucie Mets during the regular season.
Cecchini was 1 for 3 with a walk and scored both of the Rafters runners. He also had a hit stolen away on a nice sliding catch by the Surprise center fielder. He batted second and played the whole game at shortstop.
Gavin is now 5-9 with four walks, SB, double and five runs scored in three games. He had a breakout year with the bat for the Binghamton Mets which lead him to the Eastern League Rookie of the Year award.
Mets pitching prospect Beck Wheeler made his AFL debut pitching two innings in relief and picking up the win. He allowed a hit, walk and struck out one. Wheeler had a 3.38 ERA and 1.227 WHIP in 58.1 innings for the Binghamton Mets this year.
Surprise centerfielder…awaiting the announcement.
I was thinking with all the time Nimmo missed why he was selected to go to AFL again…
lol I was wondering if someone would catch that. I’m not sure if players are eligible to play two years in a row and he did last year. Definitely something I should find out.
You can do it
