D Smith

Dominic Smith has come alive in the South Atlantic League and in a big way, by continuing to hit the cover off the ball.

In Thursday’s Sand Gnats 5-3 win against the West Virginia Power, Smith continued his hot hitting with another multi-hit game and finished the night 2 for 4, with two RBI’s and raised his batting average to .271 on the young season.

The first round draft pick, ended the month of April batting .217/.267/.253, but has taken May by storm and in seven games so far in the month, he is batting .458/.552/.542.  He has also had an impressive string of games, hitting safely in five straight and all are multi-hit games. Smith hasn’t shown any power at all, actually last season playing between Kingsport (R) and Brooklyn (A-), he only hit three home runs in 175 at bats, but he did bat .301/.398/.439.

Smith might not be the guy to launch baseballs over the wall, but he will be the consistent hitter that gets on base and sets the table for the bigger sluggers.  He still has time to grow into a power hitter, but in the meantime, he is doing what most knew he could do, and that is hit.
